JIGME DORJI NATIONAL PARK (JDNP), is the largest NP in Bhutan. Stretching from the warm broadleaf forests of the Eastern Himalayas to the permanent ice peaks of the North Western Himalayas, it is accepted to be one of the most biologically rich areas in the EasternHimalayas. Covering an area over 4,000 square kilometres, JDNP’s diverse landscape supports an extensive range of vegetation, endangered plants and wildlife. In spring the alpine zone is alive with colour from wild flowers such as edelweiss and blue poppies– Bhutan’s national flower, while lower down the mountain slopes, forests of rhododendrons support the many hundred different avian species,later the monsoon rains and the warmth of summer encourage the abundant orchids to blossom in the forests. Throughout the year the endangered Snow Leopard, the Bengal Tiger, the Red Panda and Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin, roam freely in the park. To-date JDNP is home to approximately 36 different species of mammals, 39 butterfly, 328 birds and 1,450 vascular plants and provides the traveller with the chance to find more rare and previously unknown plants and wildlife.
